Three Congress MPs Write to LS Speaker, Allege Rahul Gandhi Was 'Mishandled'

New Delhi, February 17, 2023: Three Congress members of Parliament (MPs) have written a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, alleging that party leader Rahul Gandhi was "mishandled" during the recent protests against the Adani Group's alleged financial irregularities.

The MPs who signed the letter are K. Suresh, Jothimani, and Manickam Tagore. They claimed that Gandhi was "manhandled" and "forcibly evicted" from the protest site near the Parliament building on February 13.

Allegations of Mishandling

In the letter, the MPs alleged that the police acted with excessive force against Gandhi and other protesters. They claimed that Gandhi was pushed, shoved, and "lifted off his feet" by police personnel.

They further alleged that the police used "unnecessary" tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protesters, causing discomfort to Gandhi and other senior Congress leaders.

Concerns about Parliamentary Privilege

The MPs argued that the mishandling of Gandhi constituted a "breach of parliamentary privilege" since he is a member of Parliament. They claimed that the police action violated his right to protest and express his views as a duly elected representative.

Demand for Investigation

The MPs demanded an immediate investigation into the alleged mishandling of Gandhi. They requested Birla to initiate appropriate action against the responsible police personnel and to ensure that such incidents are not repeated in the future.

Speaker's Response

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has not yet responded to the letter. He is expected to examine the allegations and take appropriate action as per parliamentary norms.

Background

The Congress party has been leading protests against the Adani Group following allegations that the company manipulated stock prices and inflated its market value. The protests have been marred by clashes with the police, with several Congress leaders being detained.

Rahul Gandhi has been at the forefront of these protests and has been vocal in criticizing the government's alleged ties to the Adani Group.
