BJP Shortlists 230 Candidates for 70 Delhi Assembly Seats
With the Delhi Assembly elections approaching, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has finalized a shortlist of potential candidates for the 70 seats in the city.
According to party leaders, the BJP's state election committee, headed by Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, met for over four hours on Thursday to screen the names of candidates. The panel reviewed a list of over 700 potential candidates compiled by Central observers.
Following the screening process, the committee has shortlisted around 225-230 candidates. The final list is expected to be released next week.
A top party leader involved in the exercise confirmed the development, stating that the shortlisted candidates have been selected based on their experience, popularity, and winnability.
"We have finalized the names of around 230 candidates. The list includes a mix of sitting MLAs, new faces, and leaders from different communities," said the leader.
The BJP is looking to strengthen its position in the Delhi Assembly, where it is currently the main opposition party. In the 2015 elections, the party won 3 of the 70 seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) secured a landslide victory with 67 seats.
The Delhi Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in early 2020. The exact dates have not yet been announced by the Election Commission of India.
The BJP is facing a strong challenge from the incumbent AAP government, which has been implementing a number of populist schemes in Delhi. However, the BJP is hoping to capitalize on the perceived anti-incumbency factor and dissatisfaction with the AAP's performance on certain issues.
The party is also expected to focus on issues such as national security, development, and corruption during the campaign. The BJP will be aiming to form its own government in Delhi for the first time since 1998.
