## Amit Shah Addresses Media After Remarks on B.R. Ambedkar
New Delhi, 14 April 2023: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday addressed the media to clarify his recent remarks on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
Earlier this month, Shah had faced criticism for stating that Ambedkar had supported the Hindu Code Bill, which aimed to reform Hindu personal law and practices. Critics argued that Ambedkar had opposed the bill and that Shah's comments were historically inaccurate.
In his press briefing, Shah maintained that his statement was based on a thorough understanding of Ambedkar's views.
"I stand by my previous remarks that Dr. Ambedkar had expressed support for the Hindu Code Bill," Shah said. "I have extensively studied his writings and speeches, and my assessment is supported by ample evidence."
Shah further explained that Ambedkar had initially opposed the bill but had later revised his position.
"In 1948, Ambedkar had indeed opposed the Hindu Code Bill due to concerns about the timing and implementation," Shah said. "However, in subsequent years, he acknowledged the need for reform and expressed support for the bill's principles."
Shah cited Ambedkar's speech in the Constituent Assembly in 1951 as evidence of his changed views. In that speech, Ambedkar stated that the Hindu Code Bill "is necessary for the social and economic progress of the country."
"It is important to note that Ambedkar was a dynamic and evolving thinker," Shah said. "His views on various issues, including the Hindu Code Bill, changed over time as he gained more knowledge and experience."
Shah emphasized that his aim is not to engage in historical revisionism or to detract from Ambedkar's legacy.
"I have the utmost respect for Dr. Ambedkar and his contributions to the making of India," Shah said. "My intention is solely to shed light on his complex and nuanced position on the Hindu Code Bill."
Shah concluded by reiterating his commitment to upholding the rights of all Indians, including Dalits and other marginalized communities.
"The BJP government is committed to the welfare and empowerment of Dalits and all sections of society," Shah said. "We will continue to draw inspiration from Dr. Ambedkar's vision for a just and equitable India."
