Delhi Weather Update: Chilly Morning Greets National Capital Amid 'Hazardous' Air Quality Levels

New Delhi, December 20, 2024: Delhi residents woke up to a chilly morning on Tuesday as the city recorded a temperature of 17.93 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a minimum temperature of 10.05 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 22.9 degrees Celsius for the day.

The relative humidity in the city is currently at 37%, while wind speeds are reaching up to 37 km/h. The sky is expected to remain clear throughout the day, providing a comfortable weather outlook for the capital. Sunrise occurred at 7:09 AM, and sunset is expected at 5:28 PM.

However, the air quality in Delhi remains a cause for concern. The System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) has classified the air quality as 'hazardous' for the 12th consecutive day. The air quality index (AQI) is currently at 412, which is in the 'severe' category.

The high levels of pollution are being attributed to a combination of factors, including vehicular emissions, industrial activities, and construction dust. The lack of wind has also contributed to the trapping of pollutants in the air.

Residents are advised to take precautions to protect their health, such as wearing face masks outdoors, staying indoors as much as possible, and reducing physical exertion.

The IMD has predicted that the air quality will continue to remain in the 'severe' category over the next few days. However, there is some hope for improvement later this week, as a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to bring in cleaner air.

In the meantime, the government has taken several measures to combat the air pollution, including implementing the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) and banning construction activities.

Citizens are urged to cooperate with the authorities and do their part to reduce air pollution in the national capital.
