Delhi University Awaits UGC Guidance on PhD Entrance Plans

New Delhi, March 29, 2023: Delhi University (DU) Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh has stated that the university does not currently have plans to conduct a separate PhD entrance examination, as is done by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Instead, DU will await instructions from the University Grants Commission (UGC) regarding the matter.

This announcement comes in the wake of the UGC's decision to cancel the National Eligibility Test (NET) for PhD admissions from 2024-25 onwards. Consequently, JNU has hinted at the possibility of reverting to in-house entrance exams.

UGC's March 27, 2023 Notification

On March 27, 2023, the UGC issued a notification clarifying that UGC NET scores will continue to be used for determining eligibility for PhD admissions for the academic year 2023-24. However, from 2024-25 onwards, NET scores will no longer be required, and universities will have the autonomy to determine their own admission criteria for PhD programs.

Concerns Regarding PhD Admission Delays

The UGC's announcement has raised concerns among PhD aspirants and academics, who fear that it may lead to delays in the commencement of the new academic session for PhD programs. Traditionally, UGC NET results have been announced in July, allowing universities to initiate the admission process in August.

However, with the cancellation of UGC NET, it is unclear when universities will conduct their own entrance exams or when the PhD admission process will begin. This uncertainty could potentially lead to disruptions in the academic calendar and delayed admissions.

DU's Response

In light of these concerns, DU Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh has stated that the university will adhere to UGC guidelines and await further instructions regarding PhD entrance exams. He emphasized that DU is committed to ensuring a smooth and timely admission process for PhD students, but the university must first receive clear guidance from the regulatory bodies.

Conclusion

As the academic community awaits further clarity from the UGC, the fate of PhD entrances at Delhi University remains uncertain. JNU's decision to consider in-house entrance tests may set a precedent, but it remains to be seen whether other universities will follow suit. The UGC's guidance and the subsequent actions taken by universities will determine the future of PhD admissions in India.
