Eight Female Bodies Recovered from Nairobi Dump: Police
Nairobi, Kenya - A total of eight bodies, all of them female, have been recovered so far from a dumpsite in a Nairobi slum, Kenya's acting police chief said on Sunday.
The bodies were discovered at the Dandora dumpsite, one of the largest in East Africa. Police believe the women were killed elsewhere and their bodies dumped at the site.
Acting police chief Noor Gabow said that the bodies were in various stages of decomposition, indicating that they had been there for some time.
"We have launched an investigation into the deaths and are working to identify the victims," Gabow said. "We urge anyone with information to come forward and assist us with our inquiries."
The discovery of the bodies has shocked residents of Nairobi and raised concerns about the safety of women in the city.
"This is a terrible tragedy," said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous. "Women should be able to feel safe in their own city."
The recovery of the bodies comes just days after the resignation of national police chief Japhet Koome. Koome's resignation followed public fury over the deaths of dozens of protesters during anti-government demonstrations last month.
The demonstrations were sparked by allegations of corruption and police brutality.
Acting police chief Gabow has vowed to take action to improve the safety of women in Nairobi.
"We will not tolerate violence against women," Gabow said. "We will do everything in our power to find those responsible for these deaths and bring them to justice."
