India Protests Bangladesh Advisor's Comments on Assam Violence

New Delhi, January 27, 2023: India has strongly protested with Bangladesh over the comments made by Muhammad Yunus, the advisor to the Bangladeshi interim government, on the recent violence in Assam.

Yunus, who is also a Nobel laureate, had criticized the Indian government's handling of the situation in Assam, where several people were killed in clashes between indigenous and Muslim communities. He had alleged that the violence was "a result of the state's failure to protect its citizens" and called for an independent investigation.

India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned the Bangladeshi High Commissioner to India, Muhammad Imran, on Friday and conveyed its protest over Yunus' remarks. The MEA spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, said that India "rejected the unfounded and inaccurate comments made by Mr. Yunus."

Bagchi stated that the violence in Assam was "a result of land disputes and long-standing tensions between different communities" and that the Indian government had "taken prompt action to restore peace and order." He emphasized that "the situation is being addressed through due process of law and an independent inquiry has already been initiated."

India also expressed its disappointment that Yunus, who is "widely respected for his work in the field of microfinance," had "chosen to engage in matters that are internal to India." Bagchi said that India values its relationship with Bangladesh and "hopes that such statements do not affect the friendly ties between the two countries."

The Bangladeshi government has not yet responded officially to India's protest. However, analysts believe that Yunus' comments could strain relations between the two neighbors, which have long been marked by territorial disputes and cross-border migration issues.

The violence in Assam erupted on January 26, when a group of indigenous Bodos attacked a Muslim village in the Kokrajhar district, killing at least 18 people. The clashes later spread to other parts of the state, prompting the government to deploy security forces to control the situation. The Indian government has condemned the violence and announced compensation for the victims' families.

Meanwhile, an independent inquiry into the violence has been launched under the supervision of the Supreme Court of India. The inquiry is expected to submit its report within four weeks.
