Yearender 2024: India's Top Defence Achievements
The year 2024 has witnessed significant advancements in India's defence sector, with the country making concerted efforts to bolster its Armed Forces and enhance indigenous production. Here are some of the key achievements that have shaped India's defence landscape this year:
Induction of Predator Drones
In a major boost to its aerial surveillance and strike capabilities, the Indian Air Force (IAF) inducted two Predator drones, known as MQ-9B SkyGuardians, in July 2024. These drones are equipped with advanced sensors, long endurance, and a high payload capacity, enabling them to conduct reconnaissance, surveillance, and strike operations with great precision and effectiveness. The acquisition of Predator drones represents a significant step forward in India's efforts to enhance its intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.
Establishment of C-295 Aircraft Manufacturing Facility
In another major milestone, the Government of India approved the establishment of a domestic manufacturing facility for C-295 transport aircraft in September 2024. The facility, which will be set up in partnership with Airbus, will produce 40 C-295 aircraft for the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy. The production of C-295 aircraft in India will not only boost the country's aerospace manufacturing capabilities but also reduce dependence on foreign imports.
Development of Indigenous Akash Missile System
India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) made significant progress in the development of the indigenous Akash missile system. The latest version of the Akash missile, known as Akash Mark 2, was successfully flight-tested in May 2024. The Akash Mark 2 missile features improved range, accuracy, and electronic countermeasures, making it a highly effective surface-to-air missile.
Commissioning of INS Arihant
The Indian Navy achieved a historic milestone with the commissioning of INS Arihant, the first indigenously-built nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), in August 2024. INS Arihant is capable of carrying nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles, providing India with a credible second-strike capability and bolstering its strategic deterrence.
Launch of New Satellite for Armed Forces
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the GSAT-7B satellite in June 2024, which is dedicated to providing secure communication services to the Indian Armed Forces. The satellite significantly enhances communication and information sharing capabilities, particularly during military operations and in remote areas.
Other Notable Achievements
Beyond these major milestones, India's defence sector also saw several other significant achievements in 2024:
* Induction of Apache Guardian attack helicopters into the Indian Army
* Launch of the DRDO's unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), Nishant
* Establishment of a new cyber security command for the Indian Armed Forces
* Enhanced cooperation with friendly countries in joint exercises and defence procurement
These achievements underscore India's commitment to modernizing its military capabilities, promoting indigenous production, and enhancing its overall defence preparedness in an increasingly complex and dynamic security environment. As the country looks ahead to 2025, it is expected to continue investing in defence modernization, technological advancements, and strategic partnerships to safeguard its national security interests.
