Moscow, Russia - The Kremlin on Friday stated that Russia needs to understand what Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy means when he speaks of a "peace summit."

"We need to understand what is meant by 'peace summit'," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters. "What is the format? Who will participate? What are the goals?"

Peskov's comments come after Zelenskyy called for a peace summit in a video address to the UN Security Council on Wednesday. Zelenskyy said that a summit is "necessary to find a way to stop the suffering and restore peace in our land."

However, Russia has previously rejected calls for peace talks, saying that it will not negotiate with Ukraine until it surrenders its territories in eastern Ukraine and Crimea.

Peskov reiterated that Russia's position on peace talks has not changed. "Our position remains the same: we are ready for negotiations, but only on our terms," he said.

The Kremlin's stance on peace talks has been criticized by Western leaders, who argue that Russia is using the negotiations as a delaying tactic to consolidate its gains on the battlefield.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has insisted that it will not surrender any of its territories to Russia and that it is willing to fight for as long as it takes to regain control of its land.

The war in Ukraine has been ongoing for over 10 months, and there is no end in sight. The conflict has caused widespread devastation and suffering, and has resulted in the deaths of thousands of civilians.

International efforts to broker a peace deal have so far failed, and it is unclear when or how the conflict will end.
