Live 4th T20I: Jaiswal and Gill Give India a Flying Start
Mumbai, March 16: Ishan Kishan's rich vein of form continued as the wicketkeeper-batter put on a 91-run stand with debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal to give India a flying start in the fourth and penultimate T20I against England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday.
Chasing a challenging 186-run target, India were off to a blistering start, with Jaiswal and Gill taking the English bowlers by storm. Jaiswal, who was handed his international debut in the absence of an injured Rohit Sharma, looked confident from the outset, hitting a couple of boundaries off the very first over bowled by David Willey.
The young batter from Mumbai continued to take on the English bowlers, hitting two more boundaries and a six off left-arm spinner Liam Dawson in the fourth over. Gill, at the other end, provided able support to Jaiswal, rotating the strike and finding the boundaries with ease.
The Indian openers brought up their fifty-run partnership in just 34 deliveries, as they raced towards the 100-run mark in the 11th over. Jaiswal reached his half-century off 37 balls, while Gill reached the milestone two balls later.
However, the Indian innings suffered a setback in the 12th over when Jaiswal was caught behind off the bowling of Chris Jordan for 56. The left-hander had smashed four boundaries and three sixes in his entertaining knock.
Gill continued to press forward, reaching his half-century off 40 deliveries. However, he was out soon after, caught at long-on by Sam Curran off the bowling of Jordan. Gill's knock of 52 included five fours and a six.
Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant came to the crease and played some attacking shots, but India were unable to maintain the momentum set by the openers. Yadav was caught behind off the bowling of Chris Woakes for 18, while Pant was bowled by Ben Stokes for 25.
Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya played some lusty blows in the death overs, but India eventually fell short by 16 runs.
Earlier, England had posted a competitive total of 185 for eight, thanks to a fine half-century from Sam Billings and some late hitting from Liam Dawson.
Billings, who was recalled to the side after a two-year absence, anchored the English innings with a well-paced 50 off 37 balls. He put on a 50-run stand with Ben Duckett (33) for the second wicket, and then added another 50 with Liam Livingstone (26) for the third wicket.
The Indian bowlers fought back in the middle overs, with Yuzvendra Chahal taking two wickets and Harshal Patel picking up three. However, Dawson played a crucial cameo of 22 not out off 13 balls to propel England to a challenging total.
The win gives England an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series. The fifth and final T20I will be played in Ahmedabad on Saturday.
