NATO Backs Biden After 'Slip of Tongue' at Summit
Washington, DC - NATO leaders have defended US President Joe Biden after he mistakenly referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as "President Putin" during a press conference at the NATO summit in Washington.
During the press conference, Biden was discussing the ongoing crisis in Ukraine when he made the gaffe. "As I've said before, we're going to stand with President Putin - I mean, President Zelenskyy, excuse me," Biden said.
The slip was quickly corrected, but reporters raised concerns about Biden's mental acuity, given his age and previous history of verbal missteps.
However, NATO leaders closed ranks behind Biden, calling the mistake a mere "slip of the tongue."
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said, "I think we can all understand that such a thing can happen. President Biden is a man with a lot of experience, and I am sure that he will continue to lead the United States and NATO with the same clarity and determination."
French President Emmanuel Macron agreed, saying, "I think it's important to remember that President Biden has been a strong and consistent advocate for Ukraine. His commitment to our shared values and to the security of our alliance is unwavering."
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer echoed these sentiments, saying, "President Biden is a respected and experienced leader. I am confident that he will continue to provide the strong leadership that our alliance needs at this critical time."
Polish President Andrzej Duda also expressed confidence in Biden's leadership, saying, "President Biden is a trusted ally who has stood with Ukraine from the very beginning. I have no doubt that he will continue to guide us through these challenging times with wisdom and strength."
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that he was "not concerned" about Biden's mental acuity. "I think that the most important thing is that we focus on the substance of President Biden's message," Stoltenberg said. "He has been very clear in his support for Ukraine and in his determination to defend NATO."
The summit concluded with a strong show of unity behind NATO and its commitment to the defense of Ukraine. The leaders agreed to continue providing military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine and to increase their presence in Eastern Europe.
