Parliament Winter Session LIVE: Rahul Gandhi Chairs Congress Meeting Amid Ambedkar Row
New Delhi, December 11: The Parliament Winter Session commenced on a stormy note on Thursday, with the proceedings of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha adjourned for the day following an uproar by Opposition members.
The controversy erupted over remarks made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a debate in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. Shah had stated, "Babasaheb Ambedkar did not draft the Constitution, but was only part of the drafting committee."
Opposition parties, including the Congress, strongly objected to Shah's statement, accusing him of insulting Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution.
Congress Meeting Ahead of Session
Ahead of the stormy start to the session, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi chaired a meeting of party MPs to discuss strategy. The meeting was attended by senior party leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and K.C. Venugopal.
Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Adjourned
When the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha reconvened at 2 pm after earlier adjournments, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju accused the Congress of misleading the country by using only a part of Shah's remarks.
Rijiju claimed that Shah had acknowledged Ambedkar's contributions to the Constitution but had merely clarified the historical fact that Ambedkar was part of the drafting committee, not the sole author.
However, Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, repeated Shah's remark and said it only showed the minister's disrespect towards Ambedkar.
Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha, J.P. Nadda, rejected Kharge's plea and alleged that it was the Congress that had disrespected Ambedkar during his lifetime, leading to his resignation from the Union Cabinet.
Amid the uproar, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned for the day.
Likely Stormy Session
It is expected that the Parliament Winter Session will continue to witness a stormy beginning over the Ambedkar issue. The Opposition is likely to press for an apology from Amit Shah and may demand a discussion on the matter.
The government, on the other hand, is likely to stand by its position and defend Shah's remarks.
The session, which is scheduled to end on December 23, is crucial as the government plans to introduce and pass several important bills, including the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019.
