Opposition's No-Confidence Motion against Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Rejected: Sources

New Delhi, 29th December 2023: The no-confidence motion filed by the Opposition against Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has been rejected by the Rajya Sabha, sources have confirmed.

Motion Dismissed

Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh dismissed the impeachment notice on Thursday, concluding that it did not meet the required threshold for admissibility. The decision came after a brief hearing in the Upper House.

Allegations of Bias

The notice, signed by around 60 opposition MPs on December 10, accused Dhankhar of being biased against Opposition members and favoring the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The MPs had claimed that his conduct violated his constitutional obligations of impartiality.

Defense by the Government

The government defended Dhankhar, arguing that the allegations were baseless and that he had always acted within the bounds of his constitutional authority. Law Minister Kiren Rijiju dismissed the motion as a "political stunt" aimed at discrediting the Vice President.

Rejection of the Motion

The Deputy Chairman's decision to reject the motion is a major blow to the Opposition, which had hoped to use the no-confidence vote to highlight concerns over Dhankhar's conduct. The Opposition now faces the prospect of further setbacks as the government continues to dominate both Houses of Parliament.

Reactions

Opposition leaders expressed disappointment at the rejection of the motion, while the government welcomed the decision. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge called the ruling "an insult to democracy," while BJP General Secretary BL Santosh said it was "a victory for the truth."

The no-confidence motion against Vice President Dhankhar has been a major political issue in recent weeks, with the Opposition accusing him of bias and the government defending his conduct. The Deputy Chairman's decision to reject the motion is likely to further deepen the divide between the two sides.
